Last winter I had the pleasure of photographing a stunning property development on beautiful Mt Buller. The three separate apartment buildings were designed and built by Concept Designs and construction, who were my client. The objective was to capture the recently completed project for entry in to the 2012 Victorian Master Builders awards. And, Concept Design and construction won the Master Builder of the year award. The Victorian Master builders association are using images that I shot on the banner at the top of their website, and on the cover of a recent copy of their trade publication.

Once again the Mr Rental network of Franchisees got together for their annual international conference. This year we visited beautiful Fiji.

In what was my sixth year of photographing the Mr Rental annual convention, Jodie Wilson the national support office event coordinator, managed to raise the bar one more time. This years team building activity saw the group visit a small Fijian school in the north east of Nadi. The franchisees, suppliers and the national support offices got to experience a bit of the real Fiji for just a few hours, and everybody was touched by the experience in a humbling way. This provided an amazing playground for me to capture the emotion on the faces of the franchisees and the kids.

Every year I look forward with much anticipation and excitement to documenting the growth of Mr Rental and the wonderful people that make up the Mr Rental network. They truly are one of my favorite clients. I can't wait to see what is in store for next years Event.

Mr Rental is a Franchise network built upon a culture unlike any other business or corporate client that I have had the privilege of providing my professional services to/for.

I'm in beautiful Mt Buller now. Settling in now as the official photographer for Mt Buller for the whole season. Last night we had about 5 cm of snow, so today we saw a few keen boarders and skiers hitting the slopes. Well there really are only very limited places where one can ride just as yet, but I think that is going to change very fast, as there are forecasts for snow fall nearly every day for the rest of the week. So we should have some very good cover by the opening weekend.

I've recently been shooting a number of kitchens for a Brisbane kitchen designer. Just documenting some of his recent sales. So if you're in to kitchens, eat your heart out. Although, I should point out that these are not particularly expensive kitchens. Not really your typical designer kitchen that you might find in a glossy magazine. But none the less, these quality images of these kitchens certainly go along way to helping the sales professional to demonstrate recent examples of their design work in a very clear and professional manner.

I just got off the phone with my mate Mike Sullivan, editor of the magazine Business Acumen Queensland and again he made mention to me that one of the biggest issues he has with Business and PR agencies supplying press releases, is the lack of quality photos.

Not specificlly the technical aspects of a what makes an image print quality, or print resolution. Although that is often miss understood also. But what he's referring to is just plain and simple, bad photos. Under or over exposed, poorly composed, blurry, etc... Photos that he won't use in his quality publication, because they will devalue the image and perception of the magazine and the brand. So all you Marketing and PR and small business people, take a word of advice from a magazine editor, the very person that you need to convince to run your story. Make sure you have quality photos with your press release. And you can take that to mean, hire a professional photographer to capture or create some images that tell the story. This needn't be expensive. As long as you are organised, and efficient with your brief and at the time of the photo opportunity. A professional photographer can work fast and get a great shot, that is why they are professionals.

So please heed his advice, don't try to do this stuff yourself, you're only jeopardising the chances of your press release being picked up and run in the press. Hire a pro.

Drum roll...... are you ready.

It was a magical moment that I snared while shooting on the slopes in Mt Buller in Victoria Australia. Well there is actually a series of three shots. The first one is just a cracker. Click on each of the thumbnails below to see a larger image. It is so worth it I can assure you. Pay careful attention to read all of the text on the sign in the background. This brings such hilarious context and poignancy to the moment. If you look closely you can see her nose and sunglasses just start to bend out of shape. And you'll be pleased to know that she wasn't hurt. In fact she was wooshing down the same run, some what out of control again, about 10 minutes later.

This as they say is a money shot. In fact it was a winner in the Daily Telegraph snow photo of the year story. So if any other publishers in Australia or Internationally are interested, the image is available for license. Call me on 0400 708 794.

Last Friday I shot a test portrait in a friends hair salon in Beaudesert. We are planning to host a portrait day in his salon on November the 6th 2010. He has invited several of his favorite clientèle to come in and have their hair styled, a little make up applied, and then to have their portrait taken. We'll be posting the portraits on his salons Facebook page once they are all done.

It was a bit cramped in the small space, but with a relatively simple lighting set up we managed to get this lovely shot. And we have to say a big thank you to Stacey the model. She'd had very little sleep in the few days prior to this shoot, but still managed to look stunning for the camera.

Wow, I'm very impressed. I just had a dealing with a company called Aquatech, who manufacture professional quality underwater camera housings and rain covers, and I have to say I was very impressed with every aspect of dealing with them. The story goes like this. I purchased a sports shield 300 rain cover for my Nikon D3 in Los Angeles California in March 2010. And since it doesn't rain in LA, it was never used at all until I returned home to Australia. and even then, the first time I used it wasn't until I arrived at the Mt Buller ski slopes in July 2010.

So in my 3 months of shooting in Mt Buller I used it most every day, to keep the occasional falling snow, and snow thrown up by passing skiers, off the camera and lens. It was the latter that actually was the greatest risk to the camera. Because you just don't know what the occasional idiot is going to do as they ski or board past a photographer on the slopes. It performed beautifully the whole time, and was so easy to work with. And as I said about the occasional idiot, it really saved my camera and lenses on more than one occasion. But sadly the cold alpine conditions caused the clear plastic rear panel to develop a few cracks by the end of the ski season. So upon my return to Brisbane, I contacted Aquatech here in Australia to explain what had happened to my relatively new sports shield.

On Thursday afternoon I spoke with a gentleman by the name of Laurie, and he advised me to send them the sports shield and the receipt that I had and they would replace it straight away. In that conversation I expressed my concern that I would really like to have my rain cover in my kit for a corporate job that I would be flying away to Cairns for on the coming Wednesday. So I suggested to Laurie that maybe it would be best to wait another two weeks until after my corporate job was complete. But Laurie, very calmly and confidently assured me that if I mailed the shield that very day, Thursday, that they would have a new one to me by the next Tuesday, a day prior to my flight. So I mailed it straight away, and to my pleasant surprise, a brand new shield arrived on my door step Monday morning. A day earlier than expected, and two full days prior to my departure to Cairns. So I was very very happy, and very impressed with the customer service from Laurie and Aquatech. I have to say, well done. I really to love the Aquatech sports shield products, and I am now even more impressed with the company and the product after this experience.

The Third Rule

Here is one of my production Stills that I took on the set of "The Third Rule". A short film by Director Aundre Johnson, which stars Jason Biggs (American Pie), Joel Moore (Avitar) and Fabian Hogarth. These guys were hilarious to work with, alround just a pair of really cool guys. You can see some behind the scenes video clips of these dudes here.

On Sunday we headed up the PCH to Malibu with 3 models in tow to shoot a fashion editorial piece. I was also assisted by 3 amazing make up artists and friends, Nicole Vieira, Heather Roach and Jessica Dahan. Nicole's friend Julia also came along and was a great help on the beach especially, and Dillion who you can see in the shot here, gave us a hand for a few hours. Thanks guys.
It was a lot of fun, however with did have a few challenges to overcome in the process. But hopefully you'll never tell from looking at the shots. I'll get some more posted here once they are complete, but here is just a taste of some of the fun we had. The two girls in the convertible were standing up taking photos as they drove up the PCH, screaming Viva America. I think they were French. So I took these shots as we passed them for a bit of fun. As you can see they got quite a kick from it.

I can't say too much about this project just yet but it has some great names attached.

I can't say too much about this Hollywood project but it has some great names attached. It could be a little while before the producers are ready to officially release images of the cast and further information about the project, but I think I can say that we shot in some very nice locations in Encino and Brentwood Los Angeles. We also shot in a very famous second hand dealers store on Santa Monica Blv in Hollywood. The owner of the store who has been there for decades had some interesting stories to tell.

As a film industry professional of almost 20 years I fully respect all producers instructions about not prematurely releasing any images of the cast. That said, the stars of this film are hopefully doing their kill on my Unit Stills very soon, so I'm hoping we can post some official images of them here in the near future. In the mean time here are a couple of behind the scenes grabs which reveal nothing of the cast or property of the project, Here you can see the sound crew pondering a set up. Who thanks to my Jacobson Blimp, never heard my Nikon D3 fire the whole time. And Michael and David a couple of the PA's who were lucky enough to be stand ins in the Ferrari. It was a real pleasure working with you guys.

Yesterday I caught up with a good buddy of mine from the Australian Film Industry, Peter Nathan. Pete and I first met on the set of Pacific Drive in the mid 90s. Gee that was a while ago. Anyway, as It turned out Peter and I were both in Hollywood at the same time, so as Aussies do abroad, we caught up and shared some old stories over a few beers. Well yesterday was Pete's last day in the states, and he was needing a few publicity images to go with a few newspaper articles about himself and his exploits in Hollywood. So this is a small sample of what we cooked up. Hope you like them. Oh, and look out for Peters films in the coming years.

The LA Marathon was run Yesterday, starting at Dodger Stadium, and finishing at the Santa Monica Peir. An awesome spectical for all, and an amazingly inspiring effort from all runners. Especially the young man who did it on Crutches. That's right. Take a look at my video Slide show or at my picassa album to see him. It made this photographer feel very humble.

On the weekend I worked on a Documentary Film Shooting the Publicity Stills. It's about a young girl named April, who is a foster child, and her struggles with social acceptance. Mostly centered around the school environment. This however is not April, but is one of her classmates. For the sake of the project and April, we cannot reveal any photos of April at this time. I'm sure you'll understand why. But I'll be sure to let you all know here when the film is released. Best of luck Mike and Barry with a moving story, one that really needs to be told.

This weekend I visited Salt Lake City Utah for the Yoli Super Saturday Event with Yoli Founders Robby Fender and Corey Citron. Just getting there was fantastic. The country side in Utah is amazing. The snow capped mountains, are just a beautiful. THen of course the was the event. Which also had wraped in to it the weekly live Yoli Saturday training webinar. Robby and Corey ran it live at the event. So all of us in the room got to participate on the call. Pretty Cool. After the presentation we hung about in SLC for the evening with Melrie Peterson, and we went to see a High School Basket ball match between the Wildcats and Ogden. GO the Wildcats. This still is of my camera Dept, and a couple of the cast, from a short film called 'Frame137'. Sadly I didn't get a whole lot of Production Stills on this shoot, because I was rather busy working as the Director of Photography. And let me tell you I was busy. I think I got about 2-3 hours of sleep a night for the three days of principal photography. Infact the films director Judd Tilyard probably got even less in that time. Anyway, Judd first asked me in early July 2009 to shoot his latest short film. I initially turned him down, saying I'd be happy to shoot the Production stills, and maybe he'd be best to ask some more established cinematographers. So he went and asked one or two other DP's all of whom were busy or weren't interested. So Judd came back to me, and I'm so glad that he did. Hey just look at the results. Apparently Judd had a greater understanding of my potentail as a DP than what I had myself. Thanks for giving me the opportunity Judd.

But you really should take a look at this teaser, it rocks.

And finally to Milan, Polly, Troy, Luke, Smithy and every one who helped out, thank you so very much. You all put in an awesome effort. Props to all of you.

Yesterday I caught up again with one of the nicest guys on the planet that you could possible hope to meet, Jim Calloway. I first met Jim on the set of a film here in LA about 6 months ago, and when Jim heard I was back in town, he looked me up and booked me in to shoot some new headshots for him. So yesterday we trotted down to some fairly gritty parts of Down Town LA for a quick shoot. This shot was one of my Favs. Although not strictly a head shot. We did do some character driven environmental portraits along with the headshots. Hence this shot. Anyway, hope you enjoy, and here's a big shout out to Jim, stay cool man.

Yoli Convention in Las Vegas

WOW, what an event! This was awesome. And I got to met Carl Lewis in the flesh. He walked straight up to me, shook my hand and said, "I'm Carl Lewis". Like I said, awesome.

There were more than 1200 distributors there, and the company was only 90 days old. That sets the bench mark for Network marketing companies. No company has ever done that in the history of the industry. Which to me says, watch this space. No, it means more than that. I means that you need to get in to this business now. Because I'm so confident that when we come back for next year's convention, there are going to be more than 1 million distributors in Yoli. The question is, will they be in your business or someone Else's?

Oh, and I haven't even mentioned the new, "FUN" product yet. As you can see the name in this shot behind Carl on the stage. I tastes great, and it has a really good dose of Alkaplex. This stuff is amazing. I can't wait to get it myself, and see it starting to improve my Stamina on the mountain bike. Check it out here at PH Sciences, the guys who developed it. If you want to know more about it, call and ask to speak with David Matteson the Vice President. He knows all about it, and not to mention, he's a really top bloke to boot.

"Son of a Don" Short film

Here are a couple of shots of some of the amazing cast from the short, 'Son of a Don'. These specials were shot on the set in something of a rushed few minutes during lunch on the last day of principal photography. They were shot against the rather poorly hung white background, simply to give simething to help to create masks around the actors later on for use in a composited image for posters or DVD covers etc... but I quite liked the folds etc in the back drop, and decided the portraits would work nicely with leaving the BG there. And of course I didn't shoot these today, but I was making some back ups, and preparing a few images and projects to take with me when I return for another visit to the USA in just a few days. So Mike, I hope you like these, and also that you don't mind them being posted here.

This was just a lighting test for an idea I had for a particular shot. So please don't be too critical of the poor mask around the bottle and the glass. it's the stream of water that is my key interest for this test. And all this masking and glowing effects takes a while to execute. So I saved my self a lot of time by not worrying too much about the glass and bottle. but i'm sure they could be fixed up with just a little more time. That's if I cared enough. anyway. I'm fairly happy with it. But still trying to resolve some banding in the blue glow around the water. might have to give it a go again by in 32 bit as opposed to 16 bit. Which will probably cause my little old PC to have a heart attack. Time for an upgrade I thinks.

apparently my life was quite dull today. I did have some good success in the morning, but the afternoon was sadly dominated by traffic and crazy aggressive motorists.

Ok, so I didn't take the shots today, but I did post produce then today. They were sitting around in an old archived folder of shots I took while I was visiting Los Angeles last year. And I used them as test bunnies with a new Photoshop plug in today. I'm quite happy with the results. The first one is of the Tower Theatre in Downtown LA, and the other is the view from a pedestrian walk way over the departures roadway at LAX.

Stromlo forest park is Sick to the power of Rad

Well, I haven't posted a photo for a few days. That's because my mate John and I have been having such an awesome time riding all the wicked trails that Canberra has to offer. Including Stromlo forest park, Sparrow Hill, and Majura Pines. But we're home now after a grueling all night drive up the Newell Highway, bringing on extreme sleep deprivation for the second time in one week.

Boxing day in Canberra

Well we drove all through the night to arrive in Canberra today just before lunch. The plan being for a week of mountain biking with my mate John in the national capital, and the national mountain biking capital. But it's pissing rain here and the forcast is for it to continue raining all week. The rain followed us 1200km from Cunninghams gap in Queensland as we drove all the way down to Canberra. Murphys law right. Well as you can image after driving all night and staying up all day, we we quite wreaked. But I still managed to snap a few semi-news worthy items in the afternoon. A fire truck attending a call at the Canberra Novotel, and a water fountain turned green.

This afternoon I visited Toowoomba to take care of a few house keeping duties with my storage items. And while there I visited me beautiful friend, Renata. She is much more beautiful than she thinks, and I'm sure you'll agree that she lights up the screen. Just wait until you meet her in person. Her personality and generosity light up the room, as all who have met her will surely agree. Merry

Day ONE

Today I started a new habit. Well I guess time will tell if it becomes a habit. But I intend to post a new photo to this blog every single day from now until atleast April 19th 2010. April 19th 2010 being the day that I leave the USA to return to Australia after a 90 day visit. And today being about 1 month before I fly to the USA so I can get into the habit. The intention is that I pick up the camera each and every day, and expand my creativity. making me get out and meet atleast one new person every day, and find something new and interesting to shoot every day. Due to changes in work commitments and life, I haven't been shooting on a daily basis for several months now. So needing to get the creativity flowing daily once again. And so to kick start my new daily photo exercise I headed down to the Albion dog track to see the greyhounds in full flight on thier regular Wednesday afternoon twilight racing. And guess what, in the course of seeking approval from the course officials to shoot there, I met the Senior Steward there, Zac Bryson, and he was a really nice guy. Thanks Zac, I should make sure I stay in touch with you.

only 13 days until i head to LA LA LAND. but before I go I am shooting the stills for a short in Brisbane, and then I am shooting another short on the gold coast. a busy week ahead.
